50 over game, 100 times more exciting than 20/20 thrash

Whoever said there was no room for 50-over cricket in the face of Twenty20 opposition might want to take it up with 16,000 fans at Durham yesterday.

There was no hint of disappointment from the paying punters who saw a hitting exhibition from England’s batsmen to make last Friday’s T20 at Old Trafford look a little, well, dull.

Ironically, it was the man who provided the most entertainment yesterday who sounded the death knell for the 50-over game, yet his performance will have fans coming back for more and more.

Before the game Kevin Pietersen claimed: “Twenty20 will be the new form of one-day cricket. I reckon that in the next couple of years 50 overs is probably going to be something of the past.”
